420J2 is a hardenable martensitic stainless steel commonly used in the production of cutlery, pump bushings, and valves.

What is 420J2 steel？

The 420J2 stainless steel is an all-purpose stainless steel with a medium amount of carbon.    It is resistant to corrosion in domestic, industrial and mild environments.    It is resistant against ammonia and blood, as well as carbonic acid in crude oil, detergents, dilute nitric acids, fresh water, food acid, many petroleum products, vinegar, steam, and other acidic substances.    It is comparable to 440 grades in terms of its strength and impact resistance.

It is called Surgical steel because of its corrosion resistance and easy machining properties.    Also, it is used to make cutting tools such as Knives, Daggers, Swords, Domestic Scissors, Haircutting Scissors.    It is very easy to grind and produces a smooth, fine and vivid polished surface.

Due to its excellent hardening ability, 420 steel can be hardened to a maximum of 56 HRC Rockwell depending on the carbon content / composition.    For maximum hardness, larger sections should oil quenched and smaller sections can be cooled with gas or air.
