When purchasing stainless steel strip, the prices of wide coils and finished narrow strips cannot always be compared directly.

If you buy wide coils, additional processes such as slitting, recoiling, and inspection may still be required after the material arrives at your factory. If you purchase finished narrow strips, it is equally important to confirm exactly which processing steps are already included in the supplier’s quotation.

The right choice mainly depends on your production volume, available equipment, and how much additional processing is required after the material arrives.

For Stable Demand and Suitable In-House Equipment, Wide Coils May Be a Better Option

If your factory regularly uses several fixed strip widths and already has suitable slitting equipment and experienced operators, purchasing wide coils can offer greater flexibility.

Production can be scheduled according to actual demand, and orders with the same grade, thickness, and material condition may be combined into one slitting plan to improve mother-coil utilization.

However, one important factor is the amount of leftover material.

After each slitting operation, any remaining width should be evaluated carefully. If the leftover strip can be used for future orders, it still has practical value. If there is no suitable application, it may gradually become slow-moving inventory.

Machine setup, knife changes, adjustment time, and inspection should also be included in the overall production cost.

Equipment capability is another important consideration. A slitting line that performs well with standard annealed material may not necessarily achieve the same width tolerance or burr control when processing very thin or high-hardness stainless steel strip.

Finished Narrow Strip Can Reduce In-House Processing

If your factory does not have a slitting line, or if strip widths change frequently between orders, purchasing finished narrow strip may be more convenient.

The supplier can slit the material according to the agreed width, edge condition, and coil requirements, helping reduce one processing step after the material reaches your factory.

Before placing an order, however, buyers should confirm more than just thickness and width.

Important requirements may include:

  • Burr condition

  • Camber

  • Coil inner diameter

  • Maximum outer diameter

  • Coil weight

  • Packaging method

  • Edge condition

  • Surface requirements

It is also important to clarify whether additional services such as deburring, round-edge processing, or heat treatment are included in the quotation.

Special widths and small-volume orders may also be affected by material allocation, minimum order quantities, and production scheduling. For this reason, processing requirements and delivery time should be confirmed together when purchasing finished narrow strips.

Compare the Cost Based on One Ton of Qualified Finished Strip

When comparing wide coils with finished narrow strips, the most practical method is to calculate the actual cost per ton of qualified finished strip.

For wide coils, the calculation should include the purchase cost, slitting and related processing costs, and the value recovered from scrap material.

The final cost should then be divided by the actual weight of qualified narrow strip produced.

For example:

A factory purchases 5 tons of wide coil at RMB 20,000/ton.

The total material cost is:

5 × RMB 20,000 = RMB 100,000

Assume that slitting and related processing costs are RMB 5,000, and the final output is 4.8 tons of qualified narrow strip.

The remaining 0.2 tons are treated as scrap, with a recovery value of RMB 1,000.

The actual unit cost of the qualified narrow strip is therefore:

(100,000 + 5,000 − 1,000) ÷ 4.8 ≈ RMB 21,667/ton

This example is provided only to explain the calculation method and does not represent an actual quotation.

When comparing this result with a supplier’s narrow-strip price, make sure that freight, packaging, special processing charges, grade, hardness, tolerance, tax terms, and delivery conditions are calculated on the same basis.

Reusable leftover material should be treated separately as inventory rather than simply as scrap.

DSM Can Provide Customized Supply Solutions Based on Your Production Requirements

DSM can supply both stainless steel wide coils and finished narrow strips.

Based on the customer’s application, equipment limitations, and downstream processing requirements, we can help evaluate a suitable processing and delivery solution.

For stainless steel strip requiring specific thicknesses, widths, and tolerances, we can assess the appropriate rolling and slitting solution according to the available mother coil and processing capability.

If hardness or delivery condition is specified, the appropriate processing route can be evaluated according to the stainless steel grade and application requirements.

Edge options can include standard slit edge, deburred edge, or round edge, while surface requirements can also be discussed together with the strip specification.

Coil inner diameter, maximum outer diameter, individual coil weight, and packaging method can be customized according to the customer’s decoiling equipment, feeding system, storage conditions, and production process.

The available processing range, minimum order quantity, and lead time will be confirmed after the complete technical requirements are reviewed.

When sending an inquiry to DSM, you can provide the following information:

Grade, thickness × width, quantity, application, drawings, and technical requirements.

If you have not yet decided whether to purchase wide coils or finished narrow strips, you can also share your in-house equipment limitations with us.

DSM can help compare the two supply options from the perspective of material utilization, processing requirements, and overall cost.
