Temperature for subcritical annealing of AISI 420 stainless: 1245-1400 degF, 675-760 degC. Air cooling from the temperature range. The Rockwell hardness for AISI 420 stainless steel is 94-97 HRB.
For type 420 steel, the full annealing temperatures are 830-885 degrees Celsius (1525-1625 degrees Fahrenheit), then soak in a bath of water for a few minutes. Then furnace cool down to 790 degrees Celsius (1455 degree Fahrenheit), continue cooling with 15-25 degC/h/27-45 degF/h to 595 degrees C (1100 degF), air cool to room temperature. The Rockwell hardness for type 420 steel is between 86 and 95 HRB.
The isothermal annealing temperatures for AISI 420 stainless steel are: heat to 830-885 degrees Celsius (1525-1625 degrees Fahrenheit); hold 2 hours at 705 degrees Celsius (1300 degF), corresponding Rockwell hardness of 95 HRB.
