What is 420 stainless steel coil ?

Stainless steel 420, a martensitic hardenable stainless steel, is a variation of Stainless steel 410. It contains the same minimum 12% of chromium as 410. This is just enough to provide corrosion resistance. Stainless Steel 420 contains a higher carbon content than Stainless Steel 410, which is intended to optimize the strength and hardness properties. The annealed steel is ductile, but can be hardened up to 50 HRC minimum Rockwell hardness. This is the hardest of all the 12% chrome grades. Stainless steel 420 has a tendency to harden, so it is rarely welded. Martensitic steels are made for hardness, and other properties can be compromised. The corrosion resistance of martensitic stainless steels is lower than that of austenitic grades. Their useful operating range is also limited due to their reduced ductility when used at temperatures below zero and by the over-tempering of these materials at high temperatures. The best corrosion resistance can be achieved by hardening and polishing the surface of the metal.
