430 stainless steel strip
DSM
430 stainless steel is the most popular ferritic strip. This stainless steel strip is used for a wide range of indoor applications. The high content of chromium in this material provides excellent corrosion resistance under normal atmospheric conditions. It can form tough and durable passivated chromium-oxide barriers. The 430 grade's high chromium content also allows it to renew this thin protective film very quickly.
The 430 stainless strip is more resistant to stress corrosion cracking caused by chloride than most ferritic strips. It is also resistant to corrosion when exposed to dilute organic acid and many alkalis. This makes stainless strip 430 perfect for kitchen applications such as utensils, work surfaces and utensils. It is also resistant to nitric acids, which makes it a good choice for chemical applications.
The 430 stainless steel grade is best for mildly corrosive environments. If you are working in an aggressive environment, a 300-series stainless steel strip like 304 or 316L is recommended. 430 stainless strip is cheaper than 316 because it does not contain nickel or molybdenum. 430 stainless is a great choice for indoor applications that are not critical. At elevated temperatures, the 430 stainless strip is also resistant to oxidation.
The 430 stainless strip has its downsides. The ferritic structure of the steel causes it to become brittle at cryogenic temperatures. The 300-series is not as easy as it was to weld and form, but has a good drawdown capability. The low thermal conductivity of 430 can cause the cutting edges to become very hot and galling. While machining stainless strip 430, you will need to use a lot of coolant.
The heat-affected zone of 430 stainless steel strips is susceptible to embrittlement. 430-grade surfaces are susceptible to pitting and crevassing at high temperatures. Particularly in conditions of low pH.
